Find quick answers to the most common McAfee activation and subscription questions below. Whether you’re activating for the first time at mcafee.com/activate, reinstalling on a new device, or managing an existing subscription, this FAQ covers everything you need to know.

Activation & Product Keys

Activating McAfee is a straightforward three-step process:
  1. Open your browser and navigate to mcafee.com/activate
  2. Enter your 25-digit activation code exactly as it appears on your retail card, email, or product packaging
  3. Sign in to your McAfee account (or create one if you’re a new customer) and follow the on-screen prompts to complete activation and download your software
Once activated, your subscription is tied to your McAfee account — not to any individual device — so you can install and manage McAfee across all your covered devices from home.mcafee.com.
Your McAfee activation code can be found in several places depending on how you purchased:
  • Retail card (physical): Scratch off the silver panel on the back of the card to reveal the 25-digit code
  • Digital purchase (mcafee.com): Check your order confirmation email — the code is included in the body of the email
  • Retail store (digital receipt): Some retailers email the code; others print it on the receipt or provide it inside the product box
  • Existing account: Log in to home.mcafee.com — if you’ve activated before, your subscription is already linked and you won’t need the code again
If you’ve lost your code and can’t find it in any of these places, contact McAfee support at mcafee.com/support with your proof of purchase.
Yes — depending on your plan:
  • McAfee Essential: Covers up to 5 devices
  • McAfee+ Premium Individual: Covers unlimited devices
  • McAfee+ Advanced Individual: Covers unlimited devices
  • McAfee+ Ultimate: Covers unlimited devices
After activating at mcafee.com/activate, sign in to home.mcafee.com and use the “Add Device” option to send a download link to any additional device you want to protect.
The terms “activation code” and “product key” are used interchangeably by McAfee — they refer to the same thing: the 25-digit alphanumeric code you enter at mcafee.com/activate to unlock your subscription. You may see either term used on your retail card packaging, in your confirmation email, or in McAfee’s help documentation. The format and the process are identical regardless of which term is used.
A McAfee activation code is 25 characters long, typically formatted in five groups of five characters separated by hyphens (e.g., XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX).When entering your code at mcafee.com/activate, you can enter it with or without the hyphens — the system accepts both formats.

You don’t need a new activation code to add McAfee to a new computer. Since your subscription is linked to your McAfee account (not a specific device), simply:
  1. Go to home.mcafee.com on your new computer
  2. Sign in with your McAfee account email and password
  3. Select “Add Device” or “Download”
  4. Follow the prompts to install McAfee on the new machine

Managing Your Account

There are two ways to verify McAfee is active and protecting your device:From the McAfee app: Open the McAfee application on your device. The main dashboard displays your protection status. A green shield or “You’re protected” message confirms McAfee is active and up to date. From your online account: Sign in at home.mcafee.com and view your account dashboard. You’ll see a list of all devices linked to your subscription and their protection status. If a device shows as “Unprotected,” you may need to reinstall McAfee or sign in again on that device.
