# McAfee Firewall: Block Unauthorized Network Access

> McAfee's built-in firewall monitors incoming and outgoing network traffic to block hackers and unauthorized connections on Windows and Mac.

Your antivirus protects you from malicious files — but without a firewall, hackers can still reach your device directly through your network connection. McAfee's built-in firewall acts as a network-level gatekeeper, sitting between your device and the internet to inspect every packet of data that travels in or out. It silently blocks unauthorized applications from phoning home, stops remote intrusion attempts, and alerts you when something unusual is trying to connect — all without slowing down your browsing or streaming experience. ## How the McAfee Firewall Works

McAfee Firewall operates at the network level to provide a continuous layer of protection alongside your antivirus engine:

* **Monitors all inbound and outbound traffic** — every connection attempt, whether initiated by your applications or by external sources, is evaluated against McAfee's rule set before it is allowed through
* **Blocks unauthorized apps from connecting** — applications that haven't been granted permission cannot send or receive data, preventing malware and spyware from leaking your information to remote servers
* **Alerts you to suspicious network activity** — if an unknown process attempts to establish a connection, McAfee notifies you immediately and lets you decide whether to allow or block it

## How to Enable and Check Your Firewall

Verify that McAfee Firewall is active and properly configured by following these steps:
